Isthmian(Ryman)League Division 2
Banstead Athletic 0-1 Leyton Pennant
Saturday 10th March 2001
Scorer:- Jay Notley(9 mins)
Attendance:-59
@ Merland Rise,Tattenham Corner,Surrey

This was a splendid game between two sides struggling in the division. The A's had lost 7 on the trot while Leyton, although improving of late, still have serious relegation problems.Driving rain greeted the teams on a heavy and, partly, waterlogged pitch!
There was an early opening goal for the visitors when Jay Notley curled the ball into the top corner from 20 yards following good work from Reilly.Summers and Beale, particularly, could have equalised soon after while Reilly missed a great chance for the visitors on 19 minutes!
The chances came thick and fast.Tommy Lee for Leyton missed a 1 on 1 situation while Beale hit the bar and Whelan missed the follow up for the home side. The same couple combined on 32 minutes,Beale's wicked cross just headed over by Whelan.Reilly for the visitors was causing many problems for Banstead. His 25 yard shot on 35 minutes was defelected for a corner and 4 minutes later he hit the post when clean through on goal.Webb curled a shot wide and Whelan, having no luck at all,hit the post when he was clean through!
Spencer Fletcher made a great tackle on Whelan to preserve Leyton's lead before half time!
Half time raised some interesting points.Roll on roll off substitutes, utilising floodlight towers for phone companies like Orange and where was the crowd? The Palace v Wimbledon game may have taken its toll on the attendance!
The second half was more scrappy with a little needle, with Reilly continuing to pester Banstead's defenders.
The home side were better in the second half with Taylor,Beale and Hutchinson all going close.Leyton's keeper,Dave Curtis, even did a "Barthez" on a Banstead forward before making a string of great blocks and catches.Four players were booked in a half that was getting away from referee Levin, ironically from Essex, but it was Leyton who held on for 3 valuable points despite there being an incredible 8 minutes stoppage time!
Conditions were difficult for everybody but Jamie Reilly stood out for Leyton while Summers was impressive for the home side.
Banstead is a nice club with pretty good facilities,a decent programme and a ground that higher clubs might like. The low fences meant the ball flew to various parts of Surrey when miskicked. All in all a decent day out.I didn't think Leyton would hold on....but they did!!
